Artist Bio
Thomas Ashman is a self-taught mixed media artist
who lives and works in northern Utah. Drawing
inspiration from his background in literature and
experience in the construction trades, Thomas
developed his unique book binding technique to
facilitate the use of unusual materials such as glass,
sheet metal, and various types of hardware for the
binding and covering of blank art journals. Thomas has
appeared twice on DIY network's "Craft Lab" (season
2) and has had work published in Somerset Studio
magazine and Gallery. His work received the
"Curator's Pick" and "Viewer's Choice" awards at  the
"Queen Mab's Picnic" exhibit at the 18th Street
Gallery in Bakersfield, CA., and his all-copper journal
was selected to be included in the 2008 San Diego
Book Arts National Juried Exhibition at the Geisel
Library at UCSD. Thomas teaches classes at local
studios as well as national retreats. Currently, in
addition to always attempting new and varied
applications of his binding, Thomas is dabbling in doll
making, and is working on a book of projects and
techniques.
